The History
The Herencia at 46 Kim Yam Road is a fresh development that pays homage to its luminous history by preserving the façade of the former Nan Chiau High School, and with it the rich heritage of the old premise.A foot in the old and the new, it endeavours to bridge the past and present by encapsulating the emotions of nostalgia for the site while also transforming itself into a sleek and modern building befitting contemporary comfort.
A new home for offices, commercial schools and eateries, The Herencia breathes new life into the building and the surrounding River Valley area.
Rich History
Nan Chiau
Nan Chiau is one of the six affiliated schools of the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK). It was founded in 1947 as Nan Chiau Girl’s School. Throughout the years, the school kept pace with changes, and is an educational institution recognised for its values and bilingual education.

Present
1941
Initiated by Mr Tan Kah Kee, Mr Lee Kong Chian bought a mansion at Kim Yam Road and used it to start Nan Chiau Teachers’ Training School.
1965
Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan spent $2 million rebuilding Nan Chiau. The secondary school section moved to temporary premises at Guillemard Road, while the primary school section remained at the original site.
1976
Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan spent another $300 000 to add on a 5th storey to the school premises.
2000
In December, Nan Chiau High School, together with its ancillary primary school was relocated to Sengkang New Town, leaving the River Valley premise.

Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan converted Nan Chiau Teachers’ Training School into Nan Chiau Girls’ High School, with an ancillary primary school. Mr Yang Zhenli was the first Principal of the School.
1969
The new building was completed.
1990s
Following the demographic move away from the city to the heartlands, Nan Chiau’s enrolment dwindled. The school faced closure.
2013
The River Valley premise was successfully transformed into The Herencia and opened its doors again to the public.
